About:
Jacek Kochan (born on 18 December 1955 in Cracow) - composer, drummer, percussion player, arranger. He started his artistic career in the 70's, when he was cooperating with such bands as DZAMBLE or AUGUST TRIO.
In January 1981 he went to the USA and lived two years in New York where he met Jaco Pastorius, Mike Clark and Robie Gonzalez. Then, in the middle of the 80's he moved to Canada. In this two countries he was gaining musical experience and contacts with musicians which has been valuable up to now. He performed in different bands and was a leader in some of them. His musical interest was satisfied by funk, rhythm & blues and jazz bands.
Since the 90's he has lived in Poland. Although he has been a leader of his bands since the 80's, his first recordings has appeared at the beginning of the 90's. He recorded with Pat LaBarbera, John Abercrombie and Kenny Wheeler. He recorded then postbop jazz. He also recorded the first Polish audiophile jazz record PLASTINATED BLACK SHEEP, together with Ed Schuller and Adam Pierończyk published on golden CD. This period and this type of Kochan's creative output is also concerned by fusion experience (especially it is visible in the John Abercrombie's lines).
At the beginning of the new century Kochan started penetrating music which was a conglomerate of jazz, electronics and club beats. This type of creative output found his effect on records DOUBLE LIFE OF A CHAIR, NEW EXPENSIVE HEAD and ONE EYED HORSE, and also in the bands like ACOUSTIC JAZZ IN ELECTRONIC ENVIRONMENT(AJEE) or PAANSORI PROJECT.
He played as a sideman and leader with many musicians and with the such most important figures like Dave Liebman, Greg Osby, Marc Copland, John Abercrombie, Gary Thomas, Joey Calderazzo, Kenny Wheeler, Jerry Bergonzi, Eddie Henderson, Franz Hautzinger, Cuong Vu, Eivind Aarset, Zbigniew Namyslowski, Leszek Mozdzer or Tomasz Stanko. His style is easily discernible, dense, full of explicitness and musical and rhythmic nuances.
