The idea behind Shofar is to find a common denominator for the traditional Hasidic music and free jazz, as well as to continue the tradition of Jewish music, that for the band is still alive and relevant. Songs that are included on the album, come from pre-war musicological research in Ukraine, Poland and Moldova. The songs - most frequently called "niguny" - meaning magical religious songs, that should allow one to enter a trance and ecstasy; and "frejlaksy," that are more close to dance music derived from the Jewish liturgy. The goal for the musicians involved in this project was to preserve unaltered sound of original material, and to explore the entire spectrum of Chasidic music and culture associated with it. All this is combined with a creative approach to contemporary jazz forms.
