About:
Wiera Gran (April 20, 1916 – November 19, 2007) was a legendary Polish singer and actress. Born in Polish-Jewish family as Weronika Grynberg, she was also known as Vera Gran and Mariol. She started her career in 1930s in Warsaw, where she quickly became one of the most popular stars of Warsaw's cabaret circle, and made number of recordings with many local record labels. From the beginning of her career she fascinated listeners with her beautiful, low, velvety voice; the simplicity of songs' interpretation, impeccable diction, a natural way of being unpretentious. Her own original style and interesting repertoire was very ambitious, an original texts were intended for a smart and exclusive audience.
After Germany's invasion of Poland she was forced, as all Polish Jews to live in a ghetto, where she continue to sing and perform. She escaped from Warsaw ghetto in August 1942, and spend the rest of the war hiding in the countryside.
In 1950 she emigrated to France where she was associated with Maurice Chevalier's stage theater, "Alhambra"; she also worked with Charles Aznavour, Yma Sumac and Jacques Brel. She traveled the world and for periods of time lived in Izrael, the United States, and Venezuela. She visited Poland in 1965 where she recorded an album for Polskie Nagrania - Muza with songs that along with recordings from 1930s, are all included on this compact disk.
During her entire adult life she was haunted by accusations of her collaboration with the Nazis during World War II in Poland. Although she was found not guilty by the verdict of the Citizen's Court of the Central Committee of Polish Jews (her case was dropped in 1949 for lack of incriminating evidence) she has never succeeded in fully clearing her name from the allegations.
Wiera Gran died in Paris poorhouse in November 2007.
