About the performers:
The Ensemble InterContemporain (EIC) is a French chamber orchestra, based in Paris at the Cité de la musique and IRCAM, which specialises in contemporary classical music. The EIC differs from other contemporary musical ensembles in having a comparatively large group of permanent, salaried musicians (31), all of whom are nominally 'soloists'. This includes three full-time pianists, and three percussionists. The EIC is particularly noted for its performances of music by composers of the European modernist tradition. Its core repertoire encompasses "classic" twentieth-century compositions.
Since 2008, the Asko Ensemble and Schönberg Ensemble have been united in Asko|Schönberg: not an ensemble, not an orchestra, but a flexible group of musicians who can appear in formations of any needed size to perform twentieth- and twenty-first-century music.Asko / Schönberg is involved in educational projects for 7-year-olds, composition projects for secondary school students in the graduating class, and collaboration with composition departments of conservatories.
Founded in 1980 and situated in Frankfurt am Main since 1985, The Ensemble Modern (EM) is one of the world’s leading ensembles of Contemporary Music. Currently, the EM is comprised of 19 soloists from Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Poland, and Switzerland, all of whom provide the ensemble with its rich cultural background.
The London Sinfonietta is one of the world’s elite contemporary music ensembles with a reputation built on the virtuosity of its performances and ambitious programming. It is committed to placing new music at the heart of contemporary culture and pushing boundaries; the ensemble regularly undertakes projects with choreographers, video artists, film-makers and collaborations with electronica artists, jazz and folk musicians.
Ensemble musikFabrik has been commissioning new works and performing unknown ones since 1991. It is never just a question of interpretation, but of taking new paths of development. The Cologne-based soloist ensemble has built up a close collaboration with prominent conductors and composers. Contrary to what its name suggests, Ensemble musikFabrik does not have a boss. With its democratic base, the musicians themselves take the responsibility for making all-important decisions. Ensemble musikFabrik is as open as its mission: To create music that is not there yet.
24 musicians from ten different countries represent an artistic idea and a personal approach that aims to restore to their art something that seems to have been lost - gradually, almost inadvertently - during the course of the 20th century, which gives their music a place in the present and in the midst of the community for which it was written and for whom it is crying out to be heard. The members of Klangforum Wien come from Australia, Bulgaria, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Austria, Sweden and Switzerland.Sylvain Cambreling has been first guest conductor of Klangforum Wien since 1997.
The Ensemble Recherche makes music history: with over 500 first performances since its founding in 1985, the ensemble has played a major role in shaping the development of contemporary chamber and ensemble music. The nine-strong ensemble of soloists helps define the international music scene with its own dramaturgical line. Its repertoire includes classics of the late 19th century, Impressionists and Expressionists, composers of the Second Viennese and Darmstadt Schools, the Spectralists and the experimental avant-gardists of the contemporary arts.
