About:
Lubelszczyzna is not a concise ethnographic region. It comprises the present Lublin and Chelm provinces. Until 1947 this area was inhabited not only by Polish people but by Ukrainians. Remains of this cultural unity are to be found in their songs today. To start with, the present CD contains ritual songs of so-called 'calendar' and 'family' cycles which are typical of Lubelskie: we start with baptismal songs (quite rare in Polish folk tradition) put together with lullabies. Then, there are old wedding songs and later funeral songs which are still performed during the so-called 'empty nights' (puste noce). It is an interesting example of folk religiousness, dating back to the Middle Ages (like the song about the soul that has left the body). The calendar cycle includes recitations and songs for the New Year and Easter carolling. The selected tunes come from studio recordings, much different from the natural context of folk practice. This fact influences the quality of performances as some songs have been slightly shortened because of time limits. English-Polish booklet enclosed with details about the region and the musicians.
