About:
Amongst lowland regions of Poland, Northern Malopolska (Little Poland) has
special significance as the area of particularly rich folk music that until now
has preserved traditions of the 19th century. Geographically, the region covers
the territory of the former Kielce province naturally delimited by rivers:
Pilica on the North and West, Vistula on the East and Szreniawa on the South.
Recordings selected cover the three areas: Radom, Opoczno and Kielce-Gory
Swietokrzyskie districts. The most characteristic music feature of the region is
the mazurka rhythm. The oldest recordings date back to the late sixties when
folk music practice in the country was still alive and the function of music was
to supply a setting for weddings and other family celebrations. The newest
recordings, made in 1996, reflect already another music reality. In course of
time tastes and needs of old and new audiences have changed. Due to some
processes of civilization, folk customs have almost totally vanished and only
their elements have survived. From the rich repertoire of wedding songs, dating
back to the 19th century if not earlier, only a few have been preserved as
reminders of old rites.
