Niklasrecords presents Zemby 11’s re-release, an album initially recorded in
2002 but so far only circulating as a self-released CD-R. So this, in fact, is
its proper world premiere … And who are ZEMBY?
The ZEMBY (its English equivalent could very well be TEETHZ) are very crazy and
versatile duo, and a very unique under-underground phenomenon from Szczecin
city, Poland. ZEMBY comprises creative talents of guitarist Pawel Nowakowski
(disguised under the STWTZC moniker) and Scandal (Przemyslaw Thiele, the living
legend of Polish post-punk but only known as the leader of Kolaboranci – while
his Zemby project remains obscure).
For many reasons, they could be considered as a bit The Residents-like
phenomenon however, very much different in its spirit and sound: in fact,
they’ve never been directly influenced by The Residents.
Zemby 11 is probably their swansong – however we intend to release a double CD
retrospective containing 2 new pieces, recorded in 2011. The album overflows
with a cornucopia of electronics, refined arrangements and textural ideas
anchored in (more than ever) chamber music as well as para-jazz “freak-outs” and
assorted experiments. Additionally, there’s a new special guest (prolonging
their well-established tradition of guest-filled albums) – Adam Snyder of
Mercury Rev’s fame. Take heed: they have still remained a Pythonesque double
act, invariably charming and witty with their sophisticated Dadaist sense of
humour – which could very well be appreciated by western music-lovers, since the
Polish lyrics, in fact, can make them sound even more exotic, and thus
“special”, to the foreign audiences. Furthermore, this is strictly an artistic
conceptual cycle of unfettered gags and plays, at the same time maintaining
their customary habit of collaborating with acclaimed Polish writers (Grzegorz
Wróblewski and Janusz Rudnicki; the latter also performed his own “skit” on the
record’s eponymous song). All things considered, it is an avant-rock classic, an
original take on rock music, possibly unprecedented not only Poland or Eastern
Europe. Its release really brings about the opportunity to listen to
exceptionally interesting music you have never heard before…
