When I look back and think about the ideas we were dealing with a year ago, and when I listen to the recording held in that club, I’m confronted with the failures that are there; which is probably why I’d rather be doing something else than writing these liner notes right now. But I’m also excited by what I hear, that the start of the music by the new quintet was so strong. From night to night it continues to be, which is why after ten years this ensemble is still looking for it’s next gig- so that it can keep finding something different to say and hopefully pay some of the rent along the way.
This brand new 2CD documents an expanded Vandermark 5 at Chicago’s Green Mill club in June of 2009. The quintet is assisted by Scandinavian stalwarts Magnus Broo (trumpet) and Håvard Wiik (piano).
"Miniatures" is beautiful, very tasty album. Doubtless it's something more, then improvised music. Many common has with contemporary music. Anyway two songs are arrangement compositions of Jan Krenz and Artur Malawski. There's in this music outsized air and space. Jorgensmann Clarinet has a excellent sound , brothers play very careful and it is proper to advice.
Composing is a very conscious process to handle musical material. Basis is the abstraction of a concrete material. To abstract abstract material is absurd. (Thomas Pernes)
The source for the first LP is the duo's performance at the Dragon Club in Poznan, Poland; the second album represents rare solo performances by the two musicians- side [c] is Daisy's first document of solo drums, and side [d] documents Vandermark's first use of the A clarinet, a series of improvisations dedicated to Jimmy Giuffre.
The New Fracture Quartet is an ensemble organized by Tim Daisy and serves as a showcase for his own compositions. The group brings together long-time collaborator and veteran bassist Nate McBride, along with two of Chicago's strongest young musicians: Jaimie Branch on trumpet and Dave Miller on guitar and electronics.
The music of Dragons 1976 is never bound to it's tradition, as each of the members is influenced by a wide array of styles including minimalism, folk, rock, electronic and free improvisation. Rooted in jazz, their music is strongly melodic; with no set chord progressions, it is allowed to freely find its own space.
This album features Polish clarinet player Waclaw Ziempiel and American drummer Tom Daisy in series of duets and quartets with special quests: American horn player - Dave Rempis and Ukrainian bass maestro - Marka Tokara. All material was recorded live at Alchemia club in Krakow but without public participation.
The collection of miniatures recorded during subsequent 11 Fool Moons in 2000-2001 brings a sophisticated contemporary chamber music in all possible shades and colors.
Tomasz Gwincinski, born 1963, Bydgoszcz, Poland. Self-taught composer, guitar player. Works for (+-) 35 theater performances, 30 movies, numerous recordings for different labels.
Can you imagine a ballad composed of the same wild, unruly, non-harmonic sounds? Improvised without melodic line clearly outlined? Such, whose phrase is not memorable and the sound is difficult to repeat that? If you are able to state it can also imagine the music Mikolaj Trzaska and Thomas Szwelnik for alto saxophone, bass clarinet and prepared piano.
Tomek Sowinski, a Tri-City drummer and composer seems to be fascinated by the big band jazz tradition as well as by different kinds of ethnic music, especially connected with jazz idiom directly originating from Africa and Latin America. His second record with The Collective Improvisation Group reflects this fascinations.
The recording session took place shortly after the tour to Ukraine, during which the trio played concert in Lviv during the Ukrainian Orange Revolution. Not surprisingly, this historical event became the main driver for the recordings, its main inspiration, as well as an idea for the disc title.
...trio is characterized with freedom and peculiar talkativeness, which, according to their needs, allow them to poor a thick brew of red - hot sounds over the listeners heads.
Our meeting appeared to be the right idea. In short, the music for The Night is a combination of two extreme worlds my romantic, mawkish debauchery and tender, minimal analogue sounds of Wirkus machinery and enriched with economical drum structures. (Mikolaj Trzaska)
For those of us who still love those great cerebral, mesmerizing albums by McCoy Tyner or Pharoah Sanders from the early seventies, this disc will help relieve you of the bad vibes of our collective contemporary nightmare.
"Passion" is Waclaw Zimpel's initiative and composer's work. This music is not meant to express any religious experience. It rather express musician's reflection about existence, experience and meaning of agony in human existence, it is not their individual statement of belief.
HERA is barely a musical newborn. Its life is measured in months only, and it has already risen in revolt on stage like a teenager. Reminiscent of a rebel it defies fossilized jazz music patterns and leaves no trace of them through very efficient formal deconstruction. Fascinating orchestration ideas, impressive musical craftsmanship, the power of youth and a fresh approach to musical matter-all this makes them one of the most characteristic and most talented young jazz bands in Poland.
Whit Dickey is a somewhat mysterious figure. Anyone who was paying attention to The Music during the mid-90's will know him as the tremendous and uniquely gifted drummer who spent full part-and-parcel time with the phenomenal groups of David S. Ware and Matthew Shipp.
This unusual orchestra, its beautiful themes and interesting solo parts (especially the harmonica ones) make up for one of the most extraordinary albums on Polish music scene of 2010.
'I Love The Blues' will be the 46th record in the Polish jazz legend Jaroslaw Smietana's discography. Smietana is a musician, composer and producer well-known in the Polish jazz world. For years he has been working with Wojciech Karolak with whom he also created the upcoming record. On 'I Love The Blues' they will try to show the various shades of blues (classic blues, Chicago-blues and even rock and fusion) and mix them up in a spicy jazz sauce. S
‘Afrykanski Snieg’ (‘African Snow’) is a release which brings a lot of freshness, originality and stylistic dissimilarity into the Polish market. Los Agentos created a specific, soft sound mélange. All compositions are joint by intimacy mood and, though discreet, the tones form tricky harmony and one imbibes them just like the air! Every single musician who took part in the recording session for ‘Afrykanski Snieg’ has got his own music personality, his own melodic sense. And that is why the music, though rather raw, is sprightly, vivid and filled with vigor and inspiration.
The recording is highly eclectic, full of intricate harmonic solutions and deep, warm tones. It is a real windfall for every lover of the music which you cannot classify anyhow but as beautiful one.
