Polish Funk - the unique selection of rare grooves from Poland of the 70's
A wonderful introduction to the kinds of grooves we've been digging from Poland for years -- that mad mix of jazz, funk, fusion, electric, and vocal elements that somehow managed to flourish wonderfully during the 70s years of Soviet control -- a real musical marvel, considering the setting -- and because of tight border control, very few of these tunes ever made it out to the west! Polish Funk 3 - the unique selection of rare grooves from Poland of the 70's
As with previous volumes, this one's put together by the Soul Service DJ Team -- and this time around, they seem to really be opening up their bag -- increasing the styles of music offered through an exploration of fusion, vocal jazz, big band, and soul -- all with a deep undercurrent of the funk promised in the title! There's some really wicked tunes with Polish lyrics -- words you probably can't understand, but which are sung with a nicely harsh edge that almost make the tunes feel like Finders Keepers-styled funk. Raphael Roginski - Bach Bleach
Bach has always been Roginski's first musical love, through him, he says, he learned to play. These are dance forms, parts of different suites. And they are not. Because this is no Bach, but Roginski, and dances have not a traces of dance form. Irregular, slow pace, reflection on each note, surprising tone by using different voices of guitar - Bach lovers orthodox will be indignant to this idea. For others there will be a strange charm. This is a very personal record.

RGG - One
Free style music is not illogical. At least in our reckoning it does not have to, or even should not be such. Spontaneity, in turn, does not have to go hand in hand with chaos.

Robert Kusiolek, Anton Sjarov, Ksawery Wojcinski, Klaus Kugel - Nuntium
Discovering the architecture of sound, and intimate communication with every individual member of the group must be really challenging for accordionist and composer Robert Kusiolek. His group is called into existence by very progressive and at the same time rather archaic worlds of sounds. NUNTIUM crosses the borders, intersects free improvisation and feeling for structure, jazz tradition and world as well as modern music. In this way it creates vivacious, receptive, European , improvised music. Imagination, individualism and creative power are the most distinguishing features of the group.

Simple Acoustic Trio - When Will the Blues Leave?
"Eight years ago we started; they were very young, 16. I had a gig with some rhythm section and they called to say they can't do this, so what can I do? They recommend this young guy, a drummer, and he recommended to me the bass player and the pianist and we have half hour beforehand to make program and they do it without any experience! They already had individuality; they were good from the beginning. I think it is the way with musicians-if there's promise you're going to hear it immediately." (Tomasz Stanko)

Skalpel - Skalpel
Far from the technology-conscious electronica that we have grown accustomed to, Skalpel draw from the Polish jazz scene that flourished during the Communist era the elements to create a soulful and honest collection of groovy compositions. Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo demonstrate all the way through a great understanding of their sound sources and a great control over their music without ever sounding arrogant or pretentious.

Slawek Jaskulke - Slawek Jaskulke Trio
This young, talented artist undoubtedly brings a gust of his own originality in
the Polish pianism. It's been a long time since someone was so consequent in
overthrowing the existing pianistic, constructive patterns and sonoristic
standards while still employing, let's face it, the quite traditional means:
dense accordics, speeding motorics at times bordering on untamed sound
aggression on the one hand and the noticeable dose of lyricism on the other.

Studio Jazzowe P.R., Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski - Sprzedawcy Glonow
It would be virtually impossible to find any important Polish jazz composer or soloist who at one time or another in their career had not been involved with the Studio. Musicians, composers and soloists had a chance to test their own ideas and have them confronted and discussed in a peer-group setting. Without the Studio and without its leader, Wroblewski, Polish jazz would not be the same.

The Quartet (Tomasz Szukalski, Slawomir Kulpowicz, Pawel Jarzebski, Janusz Stefanski)
...probably the most important band in Polish Jazz of 1980s - the Quartet. Created by four equally talented musicians, it was the typical 'band without a leader.' The ensemble consisted of Slawomir Kulpowicz (piano), Tomasz Szukalski (saxophones), Pawel Jarzebski (bass) and Janusz Stefanski (drums). Although the promise of the Quartet, which formally existed for only two years (1978-1980), has never fully materialized, the band won a permanent place in the history of Polish jazz. It was probably the most ambitious and original attempt by any Polish jazz musicians, except Zbigniew Seifert, to re-interpreted the music of late John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner...

Theo Jörgensmann, Marcin Oles and Bartlomiej Brat Oles - Miniatures
"Miniatures" is beautiful, very tasty album. Doubtless it's something more, then improvised music. Many common has with contemporary music. Anyway two songs are arrangement compositions of Jan Krenz and Artur Malawski. There's in this music outsized air and space. Jorgensmann Clarinet has a excellent sound , brothers play very careful and it is proper to advice.
